How do you get a slim jim to open a car door? Can a slim jim open any car door? If you want to know how to use slim jim to open a car door, then you just need to keep reading!

How to Make a Slim Jim
Getting locked out of your car can be incredibly frustrating. Try using a slim jim if you find yourself locked out without a spare key. The slim jim is easy to make and can get you out of a tough situation. By following these steps, you can learn how to make a slim jim.
Step 1
Find something around your home that is long, thin and made out of sturdy material. A metal ruler works very well, however, you can also use a thin strip of plastic banding or wire hanger. A hanger doesn't work as well, unless your window is open a slight crack.
Step 2
Cut a notch about a half-inch deep into the end of the ruler with a knife. This notch will act as a hook to add functionality to the end of the slim jim. If you are using a hanger, unbend the hanger and mold the hook into a size that can slip around your door latch.
Step 3
Insert the slim jim into the space between your car window and the weather stripping. This is a very narrow space; you only have about 1/4 inch to work with. You want to aim at the area next to the door’s lock.
Step 4
Slip your slim jim around the lock and lift the locking mechanism. To lift it, hook the moveable joint by sliding it into the notch of your slim jim. Gently lift until the door unlocks. This will take a few tries and you might need to re-shape your hook.

How to Use a Slim Jim to Open a Car Door
1. To use the slim jim to unlock a car, you first need to access the car door’s locking mechanism through the rubber seal present between the door and the window. The rubber seal restricts dust, debris and water from getting inside the internal space of the car’s door. In a majority of old cars, this internal space houses nothing but the lock mechanism, so getting underneath the seal will allow instant access to it. 2. For the slim jim to fit inside the door, next you will have to make a gap large enough for it to slide in. To do that, you can use an appropriately thick wooden stick or a wooden wedge. Place the stick/wedge, in-between the rubber seal and window at roughly the center, and gently push it in deeper until the gap becomes wide enough. Make sure that the stick isn’t too thick, and that you don’t apply a lot of pressure on it or the wedge to avoid damaging the window or the seal. 3. Once the gap is wide enough, slide your slim jim inside by holding it on the opposite end of the notch. Inside, there is a thin rod which connects the door handle to the door lock. Using the slim jim you have to try to locate this rod and hook it with the notched end. In most cars, the rod is located close to the locking mechanism at the edge of the door. You might have to twist and turn trying to locate the rod, while inserting the slim jim. 4. Once the slim jim has been hooked onto the internal rod, you need to pull it up or push it down to get the door lock mechanism to open.

How to Use a Slim Jim on Power Locks
Step 1
Find a diagram of the internal wiring of your car for the specific model year, as wiring can change within the life of a single model. Determine if the rod that activates the locking mechanism is shielded from slim jimming; if so, it cannot be slim jimmed. If no shield is present, check the location of the wires. Although it is impossible to fully avoid them, it helps to know, so you take care when moving the slim jim.
Step 2
Buy the slimmest slim jim you can find. Find a blade-type slim jim, preferably with a grip for better handling. Wind athletic tape around the end for better hold if no grip is present.
Step 3
Slip the slim jim in between the window and the rubber seal and slowly push down. If you encounter resistance, stop immediately. Look at the wiring diagram to see if you are scraping against an internal screw or a wire. If it is a wire, wiggle the slim jim till it goes around the wire. If it is a screw or support, rotate around it. Pull up when you reach the locking rod. The lock button will go up, and the car door can be opened at this point. Carefully pull out the slim jim along the same path you took going in. If you hit resistance, rotate the tip a little as a wire has likely hooked the tip. Take your time and do not rush anything.
