How to Pick Manual Car Door Locks

If you find yourself locked out of the car, then you may need a way to open the door without a key. This is an annoying situation for many car owners, especially self-locking cars. You may also find that in cold weather, the key may pick up the lock. You can try to open the manual lock yourself instead of calling a professional to open the door.

Step 1 - Using the Paper Clip
If you have a traditional type of car door lock, you should be able to open it using a paper clip or hairpin. If you are using a paper clip, open it so that the paper clip has two pointed points, similar to hairpins. Insert the lock picker into the lock and move it up and down. You are trying to simulate the turn of the key in the lock of your car, so you may need to spend some time moving both barrels simultaneously. When you find the correct password, you should be able to turn the lock and then open the door as if you had the key. However, you may decide to give up before you reach that magic combination because it can be difficult.

Step 2 - Using a Slim Jim
If you find that you can't get into the door by trying to pick the lock this way, you may need a more efficient method of picking the lock. You need a Slim Jim, or a small piece of metal with a small hook like a coat hanger on the side. Take it to your car and press it against a lightweight rubber strip on the back door panel and the side of the front door that meets the window. Push the device, squeeze it, make it move forward. You should then try to hook the Slim Jim to the side of the lock and pull it into the unlock position. It may take a lot of effort, and you may not have much luck, but if you keep trying, you should be able to pick the lock eventually. After you open the lock, you can get in the car and get your keys.

Tip: Lock picking mechanisms like Slim Jims are restricted for private use in some states to prevent criminal and fraudulent use. In some states, possession of one can also be considered evidence of criminal intent, so be sure to understand the laws and regulations governing ownership of lock picking devices.

Step 3 - Use a Screwdriver
You can also use a screwdriver to open the lock on your car. In this case, you'll need a fairly old car and a small, sharp flat-head screwdriver. Push the head of the screwdriver into the gap between the lock and the door. Then, push the lock forward until it is pushed out of the hole. This will allow you to remove the lock and open the door. If you can use this method, you need to replace the lock.
