How to Remove a Broken Padlock

How do you break open a broken padlock? How can I remove a padlock without the key? If you are interested in solving these two questions, then you are at the right place!

Padlocks are great to secure your belongings. They’re easily available in the markets both online and offline, they can be used pretty much everywhere and they can easily be replaced, all while providing a pretty good level of security for your belongings and to secure any type of premises. However, the problem tends to arise when these same padlocks break, malfunction, or you lose their keys! They end up stuck in the location you used them in and you might find yourself stuck with it, unsure of how you can remove it. If that sounds like what you’re going through, don’t worry! We’ve put together a list of things you can do to remove the broken padlock!

Shim Open a Malfunctioning Lock
The U-shaped part of your lock, called the shackle, has a notch at the end. Many padlocks (especially inexpensive ones) lock it in place by moving a latch (or pawl) to fill that notch. If the pawl won't move because the lock is corroded or simply because it's new and the mechanism is stiff, you can open it by using shims to move the pawl from the notch.

Shims are thin pieces of metal that can fit into the space between the shank and the body of the lock. You can buy them, but small flat-head screwdrivers will work just as well. There's a gap between the shackle and the body, and it will be wider on one side than the other. Slide your shim into that side and press down (or tap gently with a small hammer) until the pawl releases. If this doesn't work, use two shims: slide one into the side with the narrower gap, then insert the second one into the side with the wider gap. Press or tap them into place until the lock opens. If you think the lock is basically functional but just new and stiff, insert the key and turn it repeatedly until the mechanism moves freely.

Drill the Lock Core
Drilling the lock core is a form of destructive entry. The drilling method is ideal only with the help of an expert and if the padlock does have a removable core to preserve the body. Drilling is often the last option if all attempts fail, but do not expect to keep your latch. But, if you need to puncture your lock, drill the shear line instead. Read more about it in the article about lock picking if you are not familiar with the shear line. This method is ideal for the worn-out core. For instance, you have a broken padlock with static locking pawls. When the core is detached, the internal parts of the lock can fall out.

3. Cutting the Lock
Any padlock can be cut. It does not matter if you have the best padlock ever made, or even the strongest lock that could even theoretically exist, with the right tool and enough time, you can remove any broken padlock by cutting it. Most padlocks can be removed with a pair of bolt cutters.

The stronger the lock, the larger the bolt cutters will need to be (the larger the bolt cutters, the more PSI can be applied with less strain on the user). You can also invest in harder blades for whichever bolt cutters you have.

From there, you get into power tools such as angle grinders, die cutters, etc. If the power of these tools is still not enough (which is very unlikely), you can buy stronger blades. If you have a very well composed padlock, even a tool like this might take you a fair bit of time to remove the broken lock.

The best part of the lock to cut is the shackle. It will be thinner than the lock body, though a padlock with a shroud on a chain might leave very little of the shackle exposed. Also, if the shackle is a dual release (meaning the shackle must release on both sides), you will have to make two successful cuts as if you were cutting a link in a chain.

Speaking of how you would cut a link in a chain, if you are looking for how to open a broken padlock, you might be overlooking the fact that you don’t have to open the broken padlock. With a padlock broken, you can still remove it by cutting what it is attached to a hasp, chain, door knob, etc.
