Lock Picking Introduction: How to Pick Pin Tumbler Locks

How to Pick Pin Tumbler Locks without a key? First, you should know the working principle of pin tumbler locks, and then you need to prepare Lock Picking Set.

How to Pick a Pin Tumbler Lock
The Pin Tumbler Lock is the most common lock on a home's front door. So it's a good first lock to learn how to pick.

How Pin Tumbler Locks Work
You don't really need to understand how a basic pin tumbler lock works successfully, but it does help. The pin tumbler lock consists of an outer cylindrical housing that holds the plug. The small gap between the housing and the plug is called the shear line. Remember this. It will come in handy in a while. There is a key opening on the plug. When the appropriate key is inserted into the plug, the plug can be rotated, thereby unlocking the lock. On the top of the bridge plug, drill a series of five to six holes. The holes contain different lengths of key pins (red). They are called key pins because they hit the key when you insert it into the plug. Above each keypin is a spring actuated pin. Pins are also sometimes referred to as "binding pins". In order for the plug to rotate, you need to lift each key and drive pin to the correct height - until the gap between the key and drive pin reaches the cut line. When all pins are in this position, the plug can be rotated. Here's what happens when you put a well-cut key into the lock:

When you pick a lock, all you do is use a tool, not a key, to align the gap between the key pin and drive pin with the cut line between the housing and the plug. That's it. It's very simple.

Tools Needed for Picking a Pin Tumbler Lock
There are various tools you can use to pick a lock. For this post we’re going to focus on using the most common lock picking tools: a tension wrench and pick rakes. (We’ll do a post on using bumper keys and pick guns in the future.)

Below is my wallet-sized lock pick set that I got from lockpickmall.com while I was at the ITS Muster. The picks are made of titanium. There’s one tension wrench and several rakes with different numbers of ridges, which allow you to pick several pins at a time. There’s also a pick that allows you to pick one pin at a time. Some locks will require you to do that. If you’re looking for something a littler sturdier and robust, you can find lock picking sets several places online (lockpickmall.com). If you want to be even more of a MacGyver, you could even make your own picks from a windshield wiper. You can also use a paperclip to pick a lock.
